I'm Curious
Lily loves her dear Man Kee and get's excited when people request to have photos of him. However, when it comes to taking care of the child, Mui seems to be doing the most work. In the earlier chapter Man Kee fell, while Mui was watching him. Also, while on the public transit, Man Kee was strapped to Mui's back, rather than Lily's, even though Lily is the mother of Man Kee. Why does Mui take care of Man Kee more than Lily, even though she has enough time to do it herself? Does Lily truly love and care about her son?

ReplyDeleteI think Mui mainly takes care of Mui because Mui playes a "nanny" role in this story. I find that Lilly is mainly Chen's wife, instead of Mui's mother. In chinese culture, a wife's main duty is to serve the husband. Serving the husband is at a higher priority than taking care of a child. In addition, Mui has the guilt of allowing Man Kee to climb out the window, even though she ultimately caught him. At this time, Lily became very angry at Mui, so now Mui is trying to convince Lily and herself that she is a good aunt. Furthermore, I believe Lily does indeed love her son as shown when she express her concern over Man Kee after his fall. She also is very protective over him even when Chen makes small remarks about the size of Man Kee's head. Lily must follow her Chinese customs which distances herself from her son.
